Why Farmscape?

A Recap

Lettuce + PeasWe've answered this question for potential customers elsewhere on the site, but I thought I'd explain why we the staff choose to Farmscape. Why did we start Farmscape? Why are we excited to run the business ongoing? Here's a short list of reasons for my enthusiasm to build and run Farmscape:

1. The Start-Up: Farmscape is unique. By offering to farm annual edibles in people's yards, we're offering an entirely new service to the marketplace. There are farmers who will grow your food in big fields. There are landscapers who will design, build, and maintain your yard. But before we started shop in LA, there was no service offering the combination of these -- farming knowledge and labor for the home landscape. It is impractical for conventional landscapers to tend complicated edible vegetables like a farmer would -- it takes specialized knowledge, tools, and supplies and it requires way too much human effort and vigilance to fit well into a landscaper's suite of services. Therefore we created a specialist service to address a specialized need.

2. The Mission: We are mission-focused and we believe Farmscape will be a bridge to a new food system. Most people still do not believe that homegrown, locally sourced, sustainably cultivated food is a practical solution for our nation's food logistics. We aim to prove otherwise. With each garden and each harvest basket, little by little, we demonstrate that human-grown food in the city can be a real component of our food system. We show what can in fact be accomplished even in small partitions of LA's landscape.

3. The Ethics: We want to tackle the problems it takes to build and run a socially and environmentally responsible business. There are endless riddles as we grow. We are constantly puzzling over sourcing dilemmas, especially when we encounter problems that pit the quality of our service against the best interests of the natural environment. Expect more on this topic soon -- we plan to crowd-source some of our most difficult purchasing problems here on the blog in the future as we examine the sustainability of the farm product supply chain.

4. The Yield: We grow healthy produce that tastes better than the majority of food readily available at grocery stores and farmers markets. Best of all, Farmscape brings the treasure of homegrown and sustainable food to a segment of the population that otherwise would not or could not consume it. At first our founders considered starting a garden supply company to sell products to the Do-It-Yourselfer, but one of the things that appealed to us about the service business was that we could share gardening with people who were not prepared to do it for themselves.

5. The Jobs. Farmscape creates great jobs as it grows. We love our staff, they're a smart bunch. We run the company like a think tank with the purpose of perfecting urban agricultural solutions for the modern megalopolis. We invest and reinvest in logistics improvements, ongoing education, new tools and supplies, and anything else we can think of to make our staff more effective and their workdays more fun. It helps that growing food in the city is inherently a good time.

Of course you too should Farmscape! If you live in Los Angeles and you want food that is beautiful, sustainable, and fresh, give us a call. We aspire to grow food with minimal or no ecological footprint. We avoid synthetic chemicals. Our food is grown by humans. Humans that are paid fair wages. They know a lot about farming, and they'll do it in plain sight of your kitchen window. And if you do sign up, get a big garden -- the tour will impress your dinner guests, and then the ingredients will take your home meals to a whole new level.
